5 Beautiful Farmhouse Living Room Ideas

This post may include affiliate links.  I make a small commission on them to help bring you new ideas and tutorials for you and your home.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say your living room is probably one of the busiest rooms in the house. It’s a gathering place, relaxing place and oftentimes work place. Just because it’s hectic, doesn’t mean it can’t look good. These are my favorite farmhouse living room tips. Enjoy!

1. Move the Furniture Away from the Wall

It’s a funny thing, you’d think having furniture against the wall would create more space, and in one sense it does. BUT, it draws attention to your room’s boundaries.  For a more spacious feel, pull the furniture to the center of the room. Use an area rug to define the furniture space. Next, consider what you want people facing. Oftentimes, there is a television. But if you’re trying to create a space for conversations, arrange the furniture for talking. Also, think about how people will get through the room to another room. Make walking paths around the furniture. And finally, consider what everyone needs for a long chat. Give each seat a side table or surface for setting drinks, a pillow and perhaps even a throw blanket.

2. Soften the Surfaces

Modern farmhouse style is bright and light. To keep your room from feeling cold, soften the surfaces with slipcovers, throw blankets, accent pillows and soft, plush rugs. Layer fabrics and textures in neutral palettes. Pillows are a great way to add splashes of color and seasonal style. Look for linen-style fabrics and farmhouse prints like check, gingham, ticking stripe and Swiss dots.

3. Add Homemade Touches

While the updated farmhouse style has evolved, handmade items make for great conversation pieces and add a touch of whimsy to your space.  They also help to keep your space from looking manufactured and cookie cutter.  You can add floral arrangements in metal containers, shadowboxes, hand painted furniture and accents.  Check out this video I did making a gorgeous farmhouse tray for my ottoman.  You can get the tissue right here

4. Combine Vintage and Modern

This is where farmhouse style is changing. It’s always been a mash up of antique galvanized metals and rustic wood accents. But now, vintage and Boho touches are creeping in, peppering rooms with pinks, teals, oranges and blues. Hunt for whimsical, funky pieces like oversized signs, glass vases or tins. The key is to be selective and create vignettes with smaller décor items. Sit in each chair and see where your eye goes. Then decorate that space.

5. Easy Farmhouse Window Drop Cloth Drapes

Window coverings are often the last to be considered. But they’re the finishing touch every room needs. I love using paint drop cloths for drapes. They have a linen look and rustic texture and will cost a fraction of the price of expensive drapes. You can find drop cloths in any paint or hardware store.  Just use clips to hang them. And if you’re feeling creative, they are drop cloths so they can be painted. Use stencils or freehand. When hanging drapes, mount the rod above your window and be sure the fabric hits the floor. This will elongate your window and give the illusion of higher ceilings.
